APP
Amyloid beta precursor protein (APP), also known as AAA, AD1 or PN2, is a cell surface receptor and transmembrane precursor protein which is cleaved by secretases to produce many peptides. Some of these peptides are secreted and enable to bind to the acetyltransferase complex APBB1/TIP60 to enhance transcriptional activation, while others generate the protein basis of the amyloid plaques found in the brains of patients with Alzheimer disease. The APP is one member of a family of related proteins that contain the amyloid precursor-like proteins (APLP1 and APLP2) in mammals and the amyloid precursor protein-like (APPL) in Drosophila.
It is expressed at high levels in the brain and metabolized in a rapid and extremely complex fashion via a class of sequential proteases, comprising the intramembranous γ-secretase complex, which also processes other major regulatory molecules. Previously, researchers have found an overexpression of platelet APP in Alzheimer disease. Scientists have also proven the presence of changes in APP processing in FTLD. Hence, APP has been considered to be a proper blood cell marker in Alzheimer Disease.
