| Description | Calretinin, also known as calbindin 2 (formerly known as 29 kDa calbindin), is a calcium-binding protein involved in calcium signaling. In humans, calmodulin is encoded by the CALB2 gene. This gene encodes an intracellular calcium-binding protein that belongs to the troponin C superfamily. Members of this protein family have six EF-hand domains that bind calcium. The protein plays a role in a variety of cellular functions, including information targeting and intracellular calcium buffering. Calretinin is abundantly expressed in neurons, including the retina (named it) and neurons in the cortex. Expression was found in neurons similar to the similar vitamin D-dependent calcium-binding protein calbindin-28 kDa. Calretinin has an important role as a regulator of neuronal excitability, including the induction of long-term potentiation. It is suggested that the decrease of calmodulin expression in hippocampal neurons is related to temporal lobe epilepsy. |
