Introduction of DU-145 Cell Line
DU-145 was the first prostate cancer cell line to be established in tissue culture. This cell line was isolated from a metastatic site in the brain of a 69-year-old, White, male with prostate cancer. The cells are epithelial morphology. It is an androgen-independent cell that has moderate metastatic potential but no endogenous androgen receptors (AR). These cells are not sensitive to hormones and fail to express prostate-specific antigen (PSA), but do express functional receptors activator of NF-kappa B and androgen receptors. Both PC3 and DU145 cells have been used extensively to model hormone-refractory and aggressive prostate cancer.
