Antigen Information
Introduction
Plasmodium malariae is a parasite that causes malaria in humans, is a member of the Plasmodium genus, and is the causative agent of most malaria. Plasmodium malariae is distributed all over the world and mainly througout sub-Saharan Africa, much of southeast Asia, Indonesia, on many of the islands of the western Pacific and in areas of the Amazon Basin of South America. Relative to P. falciparum, Plasmodium malariae has a low prevalence and causes relatively mild symptoms, hence the name benign malaria. The fever caused by P. malariae infection in humans recurs approximately every three days.
