Introduction
Only two malaria-related parasites, Plasmodium brasilianum and Plasmodium simium, were found in primates in South America. The genetic and morphological features of the former are very similar to those of P. malariae, while the latter is indistinguishable from Plasmodium vivax. Humans may be sensitive to Plasmodium simium. P. simium appears to be only distributed in the Atlantic Forest region in southeastern Brazil.
