Creative Biolabs now offers high-quality non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) non-human primates (NHPs) models. In the past decade, our scientists have tailored hundreds of NHPs models to boost our global customers' research and project goals. We are dedicated to providing the best and most cost-effective support to global researchers.
Definition and causes of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease
Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is a kind of common liver disorder typically characterized by too much fat storage in liver cells due to many causes other than excessive alcohol use. People with NAFLD often have few or no symptoms at all. More commonly, NAFLD is diagnosed following abnormal liver function tests during routine blood tests.
NAFLD is always associated with insulin resistance and metabolic syndrome [e.g. obesity, diabetes mellitus (type II), and high blood pressure]. It is reported that NAFLD can be caused by several medications such as antiviral drugs, corticosteroids, methotrexate, and tamoxifen. Soft drinks which deliver high concentrations of fructose manifests as another high-risk factor for NAFLD. Two genetic mutations have been identified that are correlated to the susceptibility of native Americans to a high prevalence of NAFLD.
The advantages of non-human primates (NHPs) models
Well-established animal models are indispensable for learning the disease pathogenesis and progression in humans. Ideally, an animal model of human disease should resemble the disease progression of the natural disease to the maximum extent. Small animal models are generally used for first-line screening, and for initial testing the efficacy of drugs or therapeutics. Unfortunately, some rodent models often fail to reproduce one or more features of the human disease due to great physiological distinctions. In contrary, NHPs, which are genetically the closest species to human beings, can present very similar and predictable disease responses to that of humans.
