What is Tinea Barbae?

Tinea barbae, also known as tinea sycosis, is a dermatophytic infection that involves the hairs and skin in the beard and mustache areas, which generally affects only adult men. Frequently, the tinea barbae transmission commonly occurs through contact of an infected animal to the skin of a human, but rarely through human to human contact.

The commonly observed causative agents causing tinea barbae are zoophilic dermatophytes, and several are anthropophilic organisms as follows:

Symptoms and Treatment

Typical symptoms of tinea barbae are a pimple or blister amongst affected area, swelling and redness around infected area, as well as red and lumpy skin on the infected area. In the clinic, the tinea barbae can be divided into deep infection and superficial infection.

  • Deep infection of tinea barbae tends to be more severe, nodular and suppurative, which is often caused by zoophilic dermatophytes. A symptom of deep infection is a kerion-like plaque, which is an inflammatory plaque with pustules and draining sinuses. Besides, loose or broken hair, depilation, and some constitutional symptoms as fever, malaise, and regional lymphadenopathy can also be present.
  • The superficial infection may result in crusted and partially bald patches with folliculitis, which usually caused by causative organisms. Superficial tinea barbae presents as a flat, scaly erythematous plaque with an active border which can show papules, vesicles, or crusts.

Diagnosis and Prevention

  • Besides basic inquiry diagnosis, microscopy to examine KOH of skin scraping and removal of hairs on the infected area, Woods light examination, and culture of skin scrapings or hair pulled out by the roots also can be applied for the tinea barbae diagnosis.
  • Do not share razors and keeping good hygiene practices will help reduce your chance of getting tinea barbae.

Treatment

The treatment varies with the severity of the tinea barbae infections, topical medications are enough to treat mild cases. For more serious cases, oral antifungal medications are recommended.
