Background
The CD95 gene, also known as the Fas gene, is a gene that encodes a cell surface receptor protein called CD95 or Fas. This protein is a member of the TNF receptor superfamily and plays a key role in the regulation of programmed cell death, or apoptosis. When activated, the CD95 receptor can induce cell death through a process called apoptosis, which is important for maintaining tissue homeostasis and eliminating damaged or unwanted cells. Mutations in the CD95 gene have been associated with various autoimmune and inflammatory disorders, as well as certain types of cancer. Dysregulation of the CD95 signaling pathway can lead to abnormal cell survival or death, contributing to the development of these diseases.
