CXCL10
C-X-C motif chemokine 10 (CXCL10), also named as small-inducible cytokine B10 or interferon gamma-induced protein 10 (IP-10), is encoded via the CXCL10 gene in humans. The molecular weight of CXCL10 is 8.7 kDa and belongs to the CXC chemokine family as a cytokine. CXCL10 is secreted from a variety of cells under proinflammatory situations, including eosinophils, leukocytes, activated neutrophils, stromal cells (fibroblasts), endothelial cells, monocytes, as well as keratinocytes in response to IFN-γ. This essential regulator of the interferon response, preferentially stimulates Th1 lymphocytes to the area of inflammation and its expression is related to Th1 immune responses.
Importantly, CXCL10 is a chemoattractant for T cells, monocytes and NK cells. It is highly expressed in a great number of human diseases. To date, it has been proven to be related to the pathological processes of three major human disorders: infectious diseases, inflammatory and autoimmune diseases, as well as cancer. CXCL10 is expressed in renal cancer, ovarian cancer and pancreatic cancer. In addition, CXCL10 has been considered to be a main biological marker mediating disease severity and may be applied as a prognostic indicator for a variety of diseases.
