Introduction of Listeria
Listeria is a genus of bacteria that are gram-positive, rod-shaped, and facultatively anaerobic, and do not form spores. Listeria has been found in various ecological niches throughout the environment. Listeria monocytogenes is the major human causative agent of listeriosis, which is a highly fatal infection transmitted through the ingestion of contaminated food in humans and animals. The main susceptible population includes pregnant women, the elderly, neonates, and immunocompromised patients. With around 20% case fatality rate in the overt form of listeriosis, the major clinical manifestations include abortion, sepsis, and meningoencephalitis. In addition, Listeria ivanovii is the second pathogenic species of the genus for mammals, specifically ruminants. Recent research demonstrated that Listeria monocytogenes can cause gastroenteritis and its ability to survive within various microenvironments of the gastrointestinal tract is the key reason.

Symptoms of Listeriosis
Listeria as an Enteroinvasive Gastrointestinal Pathogen
Apart from the contaminated food, various other factors, including bacterial virulence factors, underlying host defenses, and size of ingested inoculum, likely play a role in the disease ranging from asymptomatic presentation to life-threatening invasive listeriosis. There are two basic forms of presentation can be distinguished which are perinatal listeriosis and listeriosis in the adult patients. It has been known for a long time that diarrhea always antecedent to bacteremia and meningoencephalitis and the recent studies have declared that Listeria as an enteroinvasive gastrointestinal pathogen causing gastroenteritis.
Diagnosis of Listeriosis
The diagnosis of listeriosis is always depended on the physical exam and medical history. A blood, urine and spinal fluid might be tested.
