The deletion of the viral genes of thymidine kinase (TK) and vaccinia growth factors (VGF) results in enhanced tumor-selectively and antitumor activity, and reduced virus virulence. In addition, as immunoregulatory genes the deletion of the viral genes of F1L and E3L can enhance an immune response to a poxvirus vaccine, thereby breaking the immune tolerance of tumor cells.
