What Are Oncolytic Viruses?
Oncolytic viruses (OVs) are a class of viruses that specifically target and destroy cancer cells. These viruses can selectively infect cancer cells and replicate within them, causing cancer cells to die without harming normal healthy cells. In addition to direct oncolytic activity, OVs can also effectively stimulate the body's immune response, thereby further helping to identify, control or destroy cancer cells. Through a combination of tumor-specific cell lysis and immune stimulation, OVs exert their anti-tumor activity in situ. Oncolytic viruses can be naturally occurring or genetically modified to enhance their anticancer properties. When cancer cells are destroyed, they release viral particles that infect neighboring cancer cells, destroying the tumor. This approach is being researched and developed as a potential new treatment for various cancers.

Full Range of OVs Products
As leading experts in OVs, Creative Biolabs scientists have developed a library of oncolytic virus constructs that can be used not only as reference reagents but also as starting constructs for backbones for further engineering or modification to produce novel functionalities or novel oncolytic virus candidates for indications. Thanks to our industry-leading viral expertise, Creative Biolabs supports your studies throughout the preclinical phase. Our products mainly focus on adenovirus, vaccinia virus, herpes simplex virus, and vesicular stomatitis virus.
You can choose our oncolytic adenovirus construction kits to express your gene of interest (GOI) on oncolytic adenovirus genomes for in vitro assays and in vivo gene delivery applications.
Please choose our series of purified pre-made oncolytic virus for reporter-encoding, cytokine-expressing, immune checkpoint antibody-arming, capsid-modifing and miRNA-expression. Each modified oncolytic virus at the laboratory has been fully verified.
Advantages of Oncolytic Viruses for Cancer
-
Selective targeting: Oncolytic viruses can be engineered to specifically target and infect cancer cells while sparing healthy cells, which minimizes the side effects typically associated with traditional cancer treatments such as chemotherapy and radiation therapy.
-
Tumor destruction: Oncolytic viruses have the ability to directly kill cancer cells by either causing their lysis (breaking down) or inducing apoptosis (programmed cell death). This targeted destruction can potentially eradicate the tumor and prevent metastasis.
-
Activation of the immune system: Certain oncolytic viruses have the ability to stimulate the immune system, promoting an immune response against the cancer cells. This can enhance the body's natural defense mechanisms and potentially lead to a longer-lasting anti-tumor effect.
-
Delivery of therapeutic genes: Oncolytic viruses can be genetically modified to carry therapeutic genes or payloads. These genes can encode proteins that can further potentiate the anti-cancer effect, such as immune stimulatory molecules or tumor suppressor genes.
-
Synergistic effect with existing treatments: Oncolytic viruses can be used in combination with other cancer therapies such as chemotherapy and immunotherapy to enhance their effectiveness, thus helping overcome resistance mechanisms and make the tumor more susceptible to treatment.
-
Personalized medicine: Since oncolytic viruses can be engineered to specifically target certain types of cancer cells, they have the potential to be tailored to individual patients. This could lead to personalized treatment approaches that are more effective and less harmful.
-
Potential for systemic treatment: While many current cancer treatments are localized (e.g., surgery or radiation therapy), oncolytic viruses have the potential to be administered systemically, meaning they can reach and target cancer cells throughout the body. This can be particularly beneficial for cancers that have metastasized or spread to multiple locations.
