PCT is one kind of peptide consisting of 116 amino acids with the identical sequence of the prohormone of calcitonin. In general, the active hormone calcitonin is produced and secreted by the thyroid gland after the intracellular proteolytic procession of PCT. The PCT levels in healthy individuals are always below 0.1 ng/mL and thus cannot be detected in blood. However, in some conditions, intact PCT is not degraded to calcitonin and can be found in the blood. Coronary Artery Disease (CAD) is a kind of disease that atherosclerosis and thrombosis caused by coronary insufficiency lead to angina or heartache. In recent studies, the PCT levels can relate to the extent of atherosclerosis in CAD patients and even associated with the exact adverse outcome. The reason why PCT concentrations elevated in the setting of CAD is that the liberation of non-specific cytokine in the local tissue damage to the myocardium caused by necrosis and ischemia. As a result, the dynamics of PCT levels might be the most important factor for the identifying of CAD patients.

PCT Marker of Acute Myocardial Infarction

Acute Myocardial Infarction (AMI) refers to the ischemic necrosis of the local myocardium caused by acute coronary artery occlusion and blood flow interruption. Since inflammation and injury are important parts of the acute phase reactions in MI, the characterizations of high stability and long half-life (normal 20-24 h) make PCT to be an attractive molecule in AMI research. It has been reported that PCT can be detected in the serum of patients with AMI.
