Background
TMPRSS2 is a type II transmembrane serine protease that is primarily expressed on the surface of epithelial cells in various tissues, including the respiratory tract, gastrointestinal tract, and prostate. TMPRSS2 facilitates viral entry by cleaving the spike protein (S protein) of certain coronaviruses, such as SARS-CoV-2. This proteolytic cleavage of the S protein primes it for fusion with the host cell membrane, a crucial step for viral entry into the cell.
