Isolation, Culture, and Characterization Service of Microglia
Microglia, the primary immune cells of the central nervous system (CNS), induce neuroinflammation. Besides, steady-state microglia are believed to be critical for CNS development and homeostasis. Creative Biolabs offers isolation, culture, and characterization service of microglia to facilitate your microbe project's success.

As the primary immune cells of the central nervous system, microglia are the brain’s first line of defense against infection, injury, and diseases. Microglia maintain normal cellular homeostasis by phagocytosing unwanted neuronal debris under physiological conditions. However, microglia transform from their ramified morphology to an amoeboid shape, which allows the cells to be mobile and phagocytic under pathological conditions. Reactive microglia can acquire diverse and complex phenotypes depending on the activating stimulus encountered. Different types of microglia express different cell surface receptors and soluble factors that allow the cells to mediate multiple facets of neuroinflammation including cytotoxicity, repair, regeneration, and immunosuppression. The neuroinflammation caused by microglia is a trait of many neurodegenerative diseases including Parkinson's disease, Alzheimer's disease, and multiple sclerosis.
Function of Microglia
Microglial cells play many important roles within the CNS mainly related to immune response and maintaining homeostasis.
-
Scavenging
When microglial cell finds any damaged cells, foreign material, apoptotic cells, neurofibrillary tangles, DNA fragments or plaques, it will activate and phagocytose the material or cell.
-
Phagocytosis
The engulfed materials generally consist of cellular debris, lipids, and apoptotic cells in the non-inflamed state, and invading virus, bacteria, or other foreign materials in the inflamed state.
-
Extracellular signaling
Microglia maintain homeostasis and promote inflammation in infected or damaged through a series of extracellular signaling molecules, including IFN-γ, TNF-α, IL-8, IL-1 and PGE2.
