Isolation, Culture, and Characterization Service of Oligodendrocyte Precursor Cells
Oligodendrocytes are the glial cells responsible for myelinating axons in the central nervous systems (CNS). They arise from precursor cells that undergo a progression of complex stages of proliferation, migration, differentiation, and maturation to produce the myelin sheath. Creative Biolabs offers isolation, culture, and characterization service of oligodendrocyte precursor cells to facilitate your microbe project success.
Oligodendrocytes
Oligodendrocytes are the glial cells responsible for producing the myelin sheath that insulates neuronal axons in the CNS. It arises from oligodendrocyte precursor cells (OPCs), also known as oligodendrocyte progenitor cells, O-2A cells, or polydendrocytes. It also can differentiate into neurons and astrocytes depending on the brain area and stage of CNS development. OPCs are generated in successive waves from several germinal regions during development. Oligodendrocytes arise mainly from parenchymal OPCs and OPCs from the subventricular zone in the adult brain. The formation of oligodendrocytes from OPCs can be divided into four complex and precisely timed stages, proliferation, migration, differentiation, and myelination. The cells present at each stage can be identified using a panel of cellular markers.

Function of OPCs
-
Adult myelination
-
Remyelination
OPCs retain the ability to proliferate in adulthood and comprise 70-90% of the proliferating cell population in the mature CNS.
-
Neuron-OPC interactions
OPCs can undergo cell division while maintaining synaptic inputs from neurons.
-
Immunomodulation
OPCs may participate in both initiation and resolution of immune responses to disease or injury.
