CEACAM5
Carcinoembryonic antigen related cell adhesion molecule 5 (CEACAM5), also known as CEA or CD66e, is a heavily glycosylated cell membrane protein (60% of the protein dry weight is comprised of carbohydrates) that contains 7 immunoglobulin-like domains. It belongs to the immunoglobulin superfamily as well as the CEA (carcinoembryonic antigen) family based on the amino acid sequence similarities.
CEACAM5 forms a homo-dimeric quaternary structure at the cell surface. It is involved in mediating cell adhesion as well as regulating cell fate: differentiation, apoptosis, and cell polarity via the activation of certain intracellular signaling pathways. CEACAM5 is used as a clinical biomarker for gastrointestinal cancers and its mutation or abnormal expression is associated with cancer progression, making it a good target for antibody-based immunotherapies.
