Biomarkers and Antibodies Development for Gastrointestinal Cancer

Gastrointestinal cancer, a malignant condition of the gastrointestinal tract and accessory organs of digestion, including the esophagus, stomach, pancreas, liver, gallbladder, pancreas, small/large intestine, rectum, and anus. The gastrointestinal tract and its appendages cause more cancer and more death than any other system in the body. Creative Biolabs provides a number of IVD antibody development services for Gastrointestinal Cancer Diagnosis.

An overview of the mechanisms by which pathogens induce gastrointestinal cancer. (Abolarinwa, et al., 2019) Fig.1 The mechanisms by which pathogens induce gastrointestinal cancer.1

Types & Conditions

Esophageal Cancer - caused by the esophagus (runs between the throat and the stomach). Symptoms usually include weight loss, difficulty in swallowing, swallowing pain, hoarseness, swollen lymph nodes around the clavicle, cough or vomiting of blood. Chemotherapy and radiation therapy may slow the growth of tumor down. In most cases, surgery is used with chemotherapy with or without radiotherapy.

Gastric Cancer - also known as stomach cancer, is cancer that develops from the lining of the stomach. The most common cause is Helicobacter pylori infection, accounting for more than 60%. Early symptoms may include upper abdominal pain, nausea, heartburn, and loss of appetite. Later signs and symptoms may include weight loss, difficulty in swallowing, yellowing of the skin and whites of eyes, vomiting, and blood in the stool. Cancer may spread from the stomach to other parts of the body, especially lungs, liver, bones, abdomen and lymph nodes. There is experimental evidence that the treatment of H. pylori may reduce the risk of gastric cancer. Treatment of gastric cancer includes some combinations of chemotherapy, surgery, radiotherapy, and targeted therapies.

Pancreatic Cancer - occurs when cells in the pancreas, the glandular organ behind the stomach, begin to reproduce uncontrollably and form lumps. These cancer cells are able to invade other parts of the body. The most common symptoms may include yellow skin, loss of appetite, weight loss, abdominal or back pain, black urine and light-colored stools. There are usually no symptoms in the early stages of the disease, thus pancreatic cancer often spreads to other parts of the body by the time of diagnosis.

Liver Cancer - Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is the most common primary liver cancer in adults and is the most common cause of death in patients with cirrhosis. Most HCC cases occur in people who already have symptoms of chronic liver disease. HCC directly present with loss of appetite, unintended weight loss, yellow skin, abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting or feeling tired, abdominal swelling caused by fluid in the abdomen and easy bruising from blood clotting abnormalities.

Gallbladder Cancer - rare cancer that is believed to be associated with gallstones building up, which may also cause gallbladder calcification, a condition known as porcelain gallbladder. In most cases, gallbladder cancer is diagnosed after symptoms such as jaundice, abdominal pain, and vomiting, and has spread to other organs such as the liver. If diagnosed early, it can be cured by removing the gallbladder, part of the liver, and associated lymph nodes.

Colorectal Cancer (CRC) - also known as colon cancer and bowel cancer, is cancer that develops from the colon or rectum (part of the large intestine). Signs and symptoms may include weight loss, tiredness, bowel movements changing and blood in the stool.

Anal Cancer - cancer (malignancy tumor) arises from the anus, a different entity from the more common colorectal cancer. Anal cancer is usually anal squamous cell carcinoma, which occurs near the junction of squamous epithelium and is usually associated with human papillomavirus (HPV) infection. Other types of anal cancer are lymphomas, adenocarcinomas, melanomas, or sarcomas. Symptoms of anal cancer include changes in bowel habits, pain or pressure in the anus or rectum, lumps around the anus, rectal itching or bleeding.
