Engineering Cancer Cells with GM-CSF Overexpression for Stronger T Cell Activation

GM-CSF-modified whole tumor cells have been reported to induce strong and long-lasting systemic protection against the tumor challenge. With more than a decade of experience in the engineering of cell lines, Creative Biolabs offers innovative tools and services to engineer cancer cell lines with GM-CSF overexpression. Each project is customized by working directly with our team of highly trained scientists.

GM-CSF Functions in T cell Activation

Granulocyte-macrophage colony-stimulating factor (GM-CSF) was first defined as a growth factor that induces the differentiation and proliferation of myeloid progenitors in the bone marrow. It is capable of affecting not only the phenotype of myeloid lineage cells but also T-cell activation through various myeloid intermediaries. Since lymphocytes generally do not express GM-CSF receptors, most of the demonstrated effects of GM-CSF on T cells are believed to be exerted indirectly through antigen-presenting cells (APCs).

Studies Performed with GM-CSF Overexpressing Tumor Cells

Transfection of autologous or allogeneic tumor cells with the GM-CSF gene in preclinical models has demonstrated induction of cancer-specific antitumor immunity requiring both CD4+ and CD8+ cells mediated through dendritic cell stimulation. GM-CSF-modified cancer cells have been widely studied in various cancer treatments, including melanoma, prostate cancer, lung cancer, renal cell carcinoma, etc.
