Memory CD8+T cells are a long-lived population that are antigen specific and provide an enhanced protective response when the same antigen is encountered again. Heterogeneous memory CD8 T cells that can persist in and localize to different areas within the host, and that are functionally adapted to contribute to the diversity and adaptability needed to efficiently provide host immuno-surveillance. CD45RA and CD45RO, as well as a few other markers, are important markers of distinguishing circulating effector and memory T cells.
