Characteristics of T cells

T cells or T lymphocytes are a population of white blood cells that play a protection function from infections and disease in the body, consisting of several specialized T cell types to perform their own specific immune function against pathogens. As a part of the adaptive immunity system, T cells carry out specific and targeted defenses against foreign pathogens, such as allergens, bacteria, and some endogenous cells.

Functions of T Cells

T lymphocytes recognize foreign antigens by initiating and generating targeted inflammatory responses. T cells recognize foreign antigens through hyper-variable T cell receptor (TCR) specificity, and the TCR will only trigger T cell activation upon exposure to its unique antigen. Additionally, it needs to be stressed that the recognizing process requires the major histocompatibility complex (MHC) presented on the surface of antigen-presenting cells to counter the original antigen for presentation.

When activated, T cells undergo clonal expansion, and there will be a great many identical T cells with the same TCR specificity. T cells will also release a mass of cytokines in this process, which signals to other immune cells that the foreign antigen has been recognized. On the one hand, T cells can directly kill the infected cells, on the other hand, T cells can also recruit other immune cells to help expand the attack. After the threat is repelled, regulatory T cells reduce the inflammatory response while triggering apoptosis in T cells that are no longer needed. Some T cells are retained as memory T cells to ensure a rapid and efficient response in the event of re-exposure.

The Application Fields of T Cells

By studying the unique composition and function of different T cells at the macro (large population) and micro (individual) levels, we can help accelerate research in many areas.

  • Cell therapy
  • Blood cancer research
  • Autoimmunity research
  • Cancer immunology study
  • Infectious diseases study

T Cells at Creative Biolabs

Different T cell subpopulations have specific functions related to life stages. Molecular, phenotypic, and functional analysis of these diverse T-cell subpopulations will greatly facilitate research related to disease processes, including autoimmune diseases, inflammatory diseases, and cancer. To facilitate the global customer project process, Creative Biolabs provides a variety of T cell subsets with high purity and viability. All of the relevant biological samples were obtained from IRB-consented donors. Meanwhile, Creative Biolabs is committed to offering customized service and cell products to every customer.
