Low-density lipoprotein receptor-related protein (LRP) family, also known as LDL receptor-related protein family, constitutes a class of structurally closely related cell surface receptors that fulfill diverse biological functions in different organs, tissues, and cell types. Until now, four members of the LDL family have been widely studied, namely LRP1, LRP2, LRP4, and LRP6. Studies have shown that LRPs could recognize more than 30 different ligands that represent several families of proteins, including but not limited to lipoproteins, proteinases, proteinase-inhibitor complexes, ECM proteins, bacterial toxins, viruses, and various intracellular proteins. It has also been reported that members of the LRPs family are involved in the regulation of numerous physiological processes, such as regulation of the activity of lipid-degrading lysosomal enzymes, regulation cholesterol homeostasis, and regulation of cell surface protease activity.
Here, we have described in details of members of the LRP family, including low-density lipoprotein receptor-related protein 1, low-density lipoprotein receptor-related protein 2, low-density lipoprotein receptor-related protein 4 and low-density lipoprotein receptor-related protein 6.
