CD38

Cyclic adenosine 5'-diphosphate-ribose, an intracellular messenger that mobilizes calcium ions, is synthesized and hydrolyzed by the type II transmembrane glycoprotein that this gene encodes. The protein appears to have both external and intracellular roles, as evidenced by the release of soluble protein and the capacity of membrane-bound protein to be internalized. This protein has a single membrane-spanning domain, an N-terminal cytoplasmic tail, a C-terminal extracellular region, and four N-glycosylation sites. Crystallographic study shows that the functional molecule is a dimer, with the catalytic site located in the middle. For people with chronic lymphocytic leukemia, it serves as a prognostic indicator.
