Introduction
Canine distemper virus (CDV) is a single-stranded RNA virus of the genus Morbillivirus, family Paramyxoviridae. The virus causes Canine distemper (sometimes termed hardpad disease), a disease which affects a wide variety of animal families. Despite extensive vaccination in many areas, it is still a major disease in dogs and is the leading cause of infectious disease death in dogs before the vaccine is available. Commonly symptoms are a runny nose, vomiting and diarrhea, dehydration, excessive salivation, coughing and/or labored breathing, loss of appetite, and weight loss. Urinary incontinence can occur if symptoms of the nervous system occur.
