Introduction
Plasmodium chabaudi is a member of the Plasmodium genus whose vertebrate host is a rodent. The pathogen is mainly distributed in Africa and was originally isolated from the blood of the thicket rat. A striking feature of Plasmodium chabaudi is its long duration of infection, which can be lurking in the thicket rat for many years. In addition, the parasite prefers to infect normal cells as other malaria parasites tend to infect immature red blood cells.
