Introduction
Ureaplasma Urealyticum belongs to the genus Ureaplasma in the order Mycoplasmatales and the family includes genera Mycoplasmataceae and Ureaplasma. The organism presents as coccoid bodies and is 0.3-0.8 µm in diameter. A unique characteristic of the bacteria is that they are free of cell walls and packaged with membranes of triple-layer, leading to the property of non-Gram strain reaction and nonsusceptibility to commonly used antibacterial. Ureaplasma Urealyticum usually resides in the respiratory and urogenital tracts. It can be found in cultures of pelvic inflammatory diseases and is transmitted through sexual activity or from mother to infant during birth. It is also associated with many human diseases, including non-specific urethritis and infertility. Doxycycline is the drug of first choice to treat the disease and Penicillin is ineffective because Ureaplasma Urealyticum has no cell wall.
Alternative Names
