L-ficolin is a serum lectin mainly synthesized by the liver. L-ficolin plays a role in host defense responses through two pathways. On the one hand, it activates the complement lectin pathway through the MBL/ficolin-associated serine protease (MASP). On the other hand, it can also act as an opsonin to enhance phagocytosis by binding to cell surface receptors present in phagocytes.
