Introduction | Complement C5a, together with C5b, are protein fragments released from cleavage of complement component C5 by protease C5-convertase. C5a is a chemotactic agent, as well as an anaphylatoxin, playing critical roles in migration and adherence of neutrophils and monocytes, smooth muscle contraction, and vascular permeability increase. Once complement C5a is produced, it rapidly metabolised inti C5a desArg by a serum enzyme carboxypeptidase B through removal of the C terminal arginine. Compared with C5a, C5a des-Arg is a much less potent anaphylatoxin that alsi induces C5a biological activities. |
