What Are Autoimmune Disorders?
Autoimmune disorders refer to the diseases caused by abnormally low activity or overactivity of the immune system. It is well known that the immune system is a complex network of special cells and organs that protect the body from germs and other foreign invaders. However, in case of immune system overactivity, the immune system doesn’t tell the difference between self and non-self and the generated autoantibodies by B1 cells will attack and damage its own tissues, thus leading to autoimmune disorders, manifested as the dysfunctions of corresponding tissues and organs.

What Are Autoimmune Disorders?
-
Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) - People with SLE develop autoimmune antibodies that can attach to the tissues throughout the body. The joints, lungs, blood cells, nerves, and kidneys are commonly affected in SLE.
-
Rheumatic diseases - The immune system produces autoantibodies that attach to the linings of joints. Immune system cells and autoantibodies then attack the joints, causing inflammation, swelling, and pain.
-
NAA Associated Celiac Disease - Celiac disease, also spelled coeliac disease, is a long-term autoimmune disorder that primarily affects the small intestine.
-
Sjögren's syndrome (SS) - The disease often accompanies with other immune system disorders, such as rheumatoid arthritis and lupus.
-
Myasthenia gravis (MG) - Autoantibodies bind to the nerves and make them unable to stimulate muscles properly. Muscle weakness that gets worse with activity is the main symptom of myasthenia gravis.
Autoimmune Disease Symptoms
Fig.2 The symptoms of rheumatoid arthritis (a kind of autoimmune disorder).2Despite the varying types of autoimmune diseases, many of them share similar symptoms. Common symptoms of autoimmune diseases include:
- Fatigue
- Achy muscles
- Joint pain
- Swelling and redness
- Low-grade fever
- Skin rashes
In addition, individual diseases can also have their own unique symptoms.
How to Diagnose Autoimmune Diseases?
Different immune diseases have different diagnostic methods. In general, the diagnosis of an autoimmune disorder requires a combination of blood tests, a comprehensive review of the history and symptoms, and a physical examination.
-
Natural autoantibody tests - Autoantibodies are antibodies produced by your immune system that attack your own cells, tissues, and organs. Autoantibody test can help to diagnose autoimmune disease.
-
Inflammation and organ function tests - Because some autoimmune diseases can cause organs such as the kidney or liver to malfunction, the inflammation and organ function tests are required to check if your organs are working properly.
How to Treat Autoimmune Diseases?
Although most autoimmune diseases can't be cured, we can utilize drugs to control the body's excessive immune response thereby relieving symptoms. Drugs used to treat autoimmune diseases include:
- Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), such as ibuprofen (Motrin, Advil) and naproxen (Naprosyn).
- Disease-modifying anti-rheumatic drugs (DMARDs).
- Immune-suppressing drugs, such as corticosteroids.
In addition, a good living and eating habits may also help to relieve symptoms such as eating a well-balanced diet and getting regular exercise.
