Bovine respiratory syncytial virus(BRSV) is a common RNA virus in the paramyxovirus family which is a cause of respiratory disease in cattle worldwide and has an economic impact on beef and dairy producers. BRSV has an enveloped, negative sense, single-stranded RNA genome which encodes 11 proteins and can predispose the animal to secondary infections. In this case, the virus does not cause any disease symptoms but weakens the immune system so that harmless bacteria can cause disease. BRSV can cause pneumonia that does not respond to antibiotics or produce lots of fluids and frothing. The replication of BRSV primarily occurs in ciliated respiratory epithelial cells and in type II pneumocytes. BRSV infection induces a series of pro-inflammatory chemokines and cytokines that recruit neutrophils, macrophages, and lymphocytes to the respiratory tract resulting in respiratory disease. Pathology typically consists of subpleural and interstitial emphysema with consolidating lesions characteristic of pneumonia.
Live Attenuated BRSV Vaccine
An attenuated BRSV vaccine comprised of the BRSV strain which propagated on a bovine cell line, plus a sterile diluent used to rehydrate the freeze-dried vaccine was established. This vaccine is the etiologic agent of a specific viral respiratory disease of cattle of all ages, including nursing calves and is for healthy cattle, including pregnant cows, as an aid in preventing disease caused by BRSV. Safety and efficacy were demonstrated by a series of experiments which concluded that no local or systemic adverse reactions related to use of the vaccine and all vaccinated cattle remained clinically normal following challenge which produced typical signs of disease in non-vaccinated control cattle.
Combination Vaccine against BRSV
There are many combination vaccines available to against some diseases common in cattle. Generally, the freeze-dried vaccines combine two or more viruses that caused different diseases by bovine viral diarrhea (BVD) virus types 1 and 2 and aids in preventing abortion caused by infectious bovine rhinotracheitis (IBR) virus and respiratory disease caused by IBR, BVD types 1 and 2, parainfluenza3 (PI3) virus and BRSV. These products should be administered SC or IM in the neck region and were shown to be safe when given to pregnant cows or calves nursing pregnant cows. These are powerful vaccines to prevent cattle disease against BRSV.
Other Novel Vaccines against BRSV
Besides two types of BRSV vaccines above, scientists still committed to developing new vaccines to provide more options. Such as a single intranasal dose of a bivalent modified live vaccine containing BRSV was under development. In the laboratory experiment, a certain positive result was obtained. Moreover, an experimental vaccine, BRSV-immunostimulating complex (ISCOM), is effective in calves with maternal antibodies and the evidence is sera from the BRSV-ISCOM-immunized calves contained high titers of IgG antibody.
