Turkey Rhinotracheitis Virus Vaccine - Creative Biolabs

Turkey rhinotracheitis (TRT) virus, also called avian metapneumovirus (aMPV), is a single-stranded non-segmented negative-sense RNA virus belonging to the family Paramyxoviridae. TRT has been classified into 4 subtypes (A-D) based on its nucleotide sequence and antigen structure. TRT infects primarily turkeys and, to a lesser extent, chickens which causes an acute highly contagious upper respiratory tract. The transmission of TRT appears to depend on the poultry population density, standard of hygiene, and biosecurity. It spread by direct contact or by contact with contaminated material due to the virus can be rapidly destroyed after release from the host to the environment. Infection with TRT can cause significant economic losses in turkey and chicken flocks, particularly when exacerbated by secondary pathogens.

Live TRT Vaccines

A live TRT vaccine is available which has been attenuated by serial passage for turkeys and chickens and is effective in controlling the disease. Live TRT vaccines can induce an active immune response that will help to prevent the respiratory disease. Moreover, the vaccines are also used in parent turkeys to produce a primary response prior to vaccination near to point-of-lay using inactivated vaccine. In-ovo vaccination may also be a promising strategy for effective, early induction of an immune response. The vaccines may be applied by spray or drinking water in the field, stimulate both local respiratory and systemic immunity, and cross-protection between subtypes may occur.

Inactivated TRT Vaccines

Inactivated aMPV vaccines are also available which can improve turkeys protection not only against the respiratory signs of TRT but also against the reproductive signs (egg-drops) associated with aMPV infection. The vaccines are not uncommon which also associate this virus with several other viruses also involved in respiratory and/or reproductive disorders. While inactivated vaccines alone induce only partial protection against aMPV infection, the inactivated aMPV vaccines are mostly used for booster immunization of layer and breeder flocks that have previously been primed by live vaccine or by natural exposure to field virus during rearing.

Other Novel Vaccines against TRT

Besides the two vaccines mentioned above, some genetically engineered viruses, including live recombinant vaccines based on a fowlpox vector expressing the F protein of aMPV, DNA vaccines encoding various aMPV proteins and, more recently, genetically attenuated aMPV produced by reverse genetics, have been designed and tested under experimental conditions. All of these have induced partial protection and give some new options in TRT vaccines development.
