Togaviridae Family
The Togaviridae family includes two genera, Alphavirus and Rubivirus. The family's viruses are able to infect mosquitoes, birds, mammals, and humans and use these organisms as hosts. Diseases caused by viruses of the Togaviridae family include arthritis, encephalitis (Alphavirus), and rubella (Rubivirus). Viruse in the family contains an envelope and its nucleocapsid is a symmetric icosahedron. The virion is spherical and has a diameter of about 70 nm. The surface of the virus is distributed with 80 trimeric forms of glycoprotein spikes, and each spike consists of three heterodimers (E1/E2). The genome of the virus in Togaviridae family is single-stranded, positive-sense RNA. The virus enters the host cell through the binding of the E glycoprotein of the virus to the receptor on the surface of the host cell membrane. After the virus enters into the target cell, its gene expression and replication proceed in the cytoplasm. Togaviruses can lead to the shutoff of the translation process of host gene. Alphaviruses can strongly activate PKR leading to complete phosphorylation of eIF2α and therefore blockade of the host translation process. The capsid protein of Rubiviruses can mediate translational shutdown of the host by inhibiting the host's poly(A)-binding protein.
Venezuelan Equine Encephalitis Virus Vaccine
Venezuelan Equine Encephalitis Virus can cause acute flu-like Venezuelan Equine Encephalitis. The virus spreads through mosquitoes and is capable of infecting almost all equines, and humans are also one of its hosts. The virus is mainly prevalent in Central and South America, and has spread to the United States and has become a serious threat to the health of the American people. Healthy adults infected with this virus usually develop flu-like symptoms such as fever and headache, while younger people with weaker immune function and older people may develop serious diseases or even death.
Rubivirus Vaccine
Rubella, caused by the Rubella virus, is also known as a three-day measles or German measles. Most of the patients infected with this virus have mild symptoms and are not even aware of the infection. The disease is mainly transmitted through the air, and the source of infection is the infected population. In addition, humans are the sole host of the virus. Rubella is distributed all over the world, and there are about 100,000 cases of congenital rubella syndrome (a congenital disease in infant caused by the infection with rubella virus in early pregnancy). Rubella is the target of the current global disease eradication program.
