Background of Anti-collagens Antibodies

Collagen is in the various connective tissues in animal bodies, which is the main structural protein in the extracellular space. As the main part of connective tissue, it occupies 25% to 35% of the whole-body protein content. Thus, it is the most abundant protein in mammals. Collagen is composed of amino acids entangling together to form triple-helices to form elongated fibrils. It is mainly found in fibrous tissues such as tendons, ligaments, and skin. Many collagens take part in cell adhesion and help maintain tissue architecture and function. Types I, II, III, IV, and V are the most common, while type I is the most abundant type of all. The anti-collagens antibodies against the collagens I, III, V, and VI are increased in coeliac patients.

The Role of Anti-collagens Antibodies in Celiac Disease

Celiac disease (CD) is an inflammatory disorder, commonly caused by an improper immune response to ingested wheat gluten (composes of gliadin and glutenin) and related cereal proteins in genetically predisposed individuals, leading to villous atrophy, crypt hyperplasia and lymphocytic infiltration in the small intestine. Therefore, people with celiac disease cannot eat gluten because it will damage their small intestine. Research evidence showed that haptenization of gliadins to collagen is associated with increased titres of IgA autoantibodies to collagens in the sera of coeliac patients and may in part explain the occurrence of autoimmune phenomena in coeliac disease. Besides, previous findings indicated that a significantly increased of IgA autoantibodies against collagen types I, III, V, and VI in patients with the active coeliac disease is of particular interest.
