Escherichia coli is a type of Gram-negative rod-shaped bacterium. Most E. coli is harmless to humans, but some specific serotypes can cause food poisoning. Non-pathogenic strains are part of the normal intestinal flora and the bacteria could secrete vitamin K2 that is beneficial to humans and prevent colonization of other harmful bacteria. According to the pathogenicity, Escherichia coli can be divided into different categories. Among them, ETEC is the focus of most E. coli vaccine research. Shigella Vaccines
Shigella is a class of Gram-negative bacilli that do not form spores. These bacteria can cause primates to become ill and are the pathogens of human shigellosis. Shigella is the main cause of diarrhea, and the number of deaths caused by the bacteria each year is about 74,000-600,000. Besides, the bacteria is the most important pathogen that causes diarrhea in children in South Asia and Africa. Shigella has four serotypes, Shigella dysenteriae, Shigella flexneri, Shigella boydii, and Shigella sonnei. S. sonnei differs from the other three shigella in biochemical metabolism. S. flexneri is the most popular Shigella in the world, and 60% of Shigella-related diseases in developing countries are caused by this serotype of Shigella. S. sonnei led to 77% of cases in developing countries and 15% of cases in developed countries. S. dysenteriae is the leading cause of regional diarrhea. Diarrhea seriously affects people's quality of life and even threaten their lives. With the increasing number of resistant bacteria, the role of antibiotics may become smaller and smaller.
