Targeting Prostate

Organ-specific drug targeting has already been explored as a possible alternative to surgery to treat prostate diseases. The strategies of prostate-targeted drug delivery refer to the direction of active agents and their carriers into the affected tissue with minimal effects on surrounding healthy tissues after systemic administration. The efficacious delivery of drugs or contrast agent to prostate is an important treatment or diagnosis strategy for various prostate diseases. After years of unremitting exploration, scientists at Creative Biolabs have developed advanced module delivery systems for prostate targeting. Many cellular targets have been successfully used for module-mediated nanoparticles to enter cells for therapeutic and diagnostic purposes.

Diseases affecting prostate have gained major significance economically and clinically, primarily because of the increasing average age of the male population in the industrialized countries. Benign prostate hyperplasia affects to some degree most elderly men. Seriously, the prostate is a frequent site of cancer. The surgical therapies of prostate hypertrophy and prostate cancer are associated with serious side effects, such as impotence and incontinence. Currently, nanoparticle medicine has become a viable solution for increasing specificity and reducing toxicity problems with current chemotherapy treatment regimens. Gold nanorods, iron magnetic nanoparticles, lipids, gadolinium oxide nanoparticles, and polymer nanospheres are also being utilized to strategically target prostate.

Examples of Targeted Delivery for Prostate

• Prostate-specific membrane antigen (PSMA) is one of the cell surface biomarkers specific to the prostate. PSMA is internalized into cells via endocytosis. Several PSMA-specific modules are currently evaluated in clinical studies. PSMA binding RNA aptamers, antibody fragments, peptides and other small molecules could serve as targeting modules for drug delivery systems.
• A novel targeted drug delivery system consisting of nanodiamonds (ND, drug delivery vehicle), DGEA peptide (targeting α2β1 integrins), and DOX (cancer drug) was developed. This targeted drug delivery system is an important advance in the field of prostate nanotechnology due to its implications for bone metastatic prostate cancer.
