| Introduction |
The AH50, similar to CH50, is used to represent the total complement activity, or screen the activation/deficiency of the alternative complement pathway. The alternative complement pathway can be activated by hydrolysis of C3 or by microbial polysaccharides and does not require immune complex formation. The membrane attack complex formed by the alternative complement pathway also can lyse the antibody-SRBC complex even if a deficiency of the classical complement pathway. But AH50 will be decreased due to hereditary or acquired deficiencies of the alternative pathway. The combination of CH50 and AH50 tests can be used for the identification of the specific pathway abnormality. |
