Capripoxvirus
Capripoxvirus which is comprised by sheeppox virus (SPPV), goatpox virus (GTPV) and lumpy skin disease virus (LSDV) is a genus of Poxviridae family. Capripoxvirus are most virulent in all poxviruses and they dominatingly infect sheep, goats, and cattle. Among three species within the Capripoxvirus genus, sheeppox virus is the type and representative virus. It is noteworthy that the virus does not infect humans. Capripoxvirus are regionally distributed in Asia and Africa. To be specific, sheeppox virus and goatpox virus are found only in Middle East, northern Africa and Asia, while lumpy skin disease virus is spread in Sub-Saharan Africa. Research shows that Capripoxvirus is transmitted through insect media. Aerosol and contact with fomites could also spread the sheeppox virus and goatpox virus. But current results suggest that contact with lumpy skin disease virus-infected animal may not cause disease in contactee.
Sheeppox Virus Vaccine
Sheeppox virus causes severe disease in sheep and impairs income from products of sheep, which is a huge threat to countries that are dominated by livestock products. The virus is extensively distributed in Africa and Asia. Sheeppox virus once had been eliminated from Europe, but a possible reason like importing animals from other areas has led to several outbreaks. And more recently, there are 2 outbreaks of the virus took place in Greece in September 2017. Vaccines for sheeppox are available and mainly based on attenuated and inactivated virus. Present data proved that live, attenuated vaccines are potent with good immunogenicity, while killed vaccines are weak in providing long-lasting protection.
Goatpox Virus Vaccine
Goatpox virus causes disease in goat and could also lead to economic losses. Vaccines for goatpox are primarily made from different strains of goatpox virus attenuated or inactivated. Present data have shown that inactivated vaccines are not able to provide sufficient protection against infection by goatpox virus. So efforts are mainly focused on attenuating virulence of goatpox virus. Presently, there are several vaccines for goatpox have shown potency in protecting animals against challenge with the lethal goatpox virus.
Lumpy Skin Disease Virus Vaccine
Lumpy skin disease is a contagious disease in cattle, which is caused by lumpy skin disease virus (LSDV). Symptoms involving in the disease include fever, nodules on the mucous membranes and skins, besides, swellings of lymph nodes are also often observed. The virus is distributed in Africa. Controlling of the disease is primarily by prevention infection with the virus. There are 5 strains of lumpy skin disease virus being used for vaccines, including Neethling strain of LSDV, Romanian strain of sheeppox, Kenyan sheep and goatpox virus (KSGPV), Gorgon goatpox virus (Iraq) and RM65. Among which, the attenuated Neethling vaccine is mostly used to control the disease.
