Rabbitpox Virus
Rabbitpox is a disease developed in rabbits which is caused by the agent of rabbitpox virus. The virus belongs to the genus Orthopoxvirus in the Poxviridae family and was initially isolated in 1933 in New York, where the Rockefeller Institute outbroke several epidemics in the laboratory rabbits. The virus is limited to infect rabbits in laboratories and will lead to acute disease. Humans are not susceptible to this virus. Rabbits infected with the virus may or may not develop pox lesions on their skin, but most of them will have fevers. It is always fatal to get the infection. The virus can spread through the air and the transmission is quick through laboratories. Rabbitpox virus closely resembles vaccinia virus in immunological.
The Development of the Rabbitpox Vaccine
Because of the close relationship between rabbitpox virus and vaccinia virus, vaccines currently used to prevent rabbitpox is made based on vaccinia virus. A study to test a Modified Vaccinia Virus Ankara-Bavarian Nordic vaccine shows that low dose of the vaccine immunized rabbits developed moderate symptom of the disease and survived the lethal challenge by rabbitpox virus. Two of the eight rabbits that received two high-dose vaccines transiently developed milder anorexia symptoms. The results indicating that this vaccine is promising against rabbitpox virus. Another vaccine that commonly used for prevention of smallpox could also provide full protection to immunized rabbits from lethal challenge. In addition, NYCBH vaccinia virus and its recombinant virus with a deletion of E3L gene which is responsible for evasion from host immune system are both 100% protective for rabbits against lethal challenge. Besides, neutralizing antibodies could be detected in NYCBHΔE3L vaccinia virus immunized rabbits and maintain a comparable level to that induced by NYCBH VACV immunized rabbits. In conclusion, at this stage, VACV-based vaccines such as NYCBH vaccinia virus and NYCBHΔE3L vaccinia virus are showing good potency to protect rabbits from rabbitpox infection.
