Biochar Complete Characterization Service

Personalized Biochar Analysis Service at Creative Biolabs

Biochar is a carbonaceous product made by high-temperature gasification or pyrolysis of biomass raw materials (such as wood, straw, etc.). Creative Biolabs has a professional technical team to provide clients with mature Biochar Production and Analysis services. Comprehensive and complete analysis of biochar helps evaluate the physical and chemical properties of biochar, helps understand the mechanism of action of biochar in soil improvement, pollution remediation, and plant growth, and ensures the safety, effectiveness, and sustainable use of biochar, thereby promoting its application in agriculture, environmental protection, and sustainable development.

  • Physical and Chemical Property Analysis
    • Density and particle size

We use gas specific gravity method or liquid displacement method to determine the density of biochar. For particle size analysis, we usually use the sieving method or laser particle size analyzer for determination.

    • Specific surface area

We use the nitrogen adsorption method (BET method) to evaluate the specific surface area of biochar. We place the biochar sample at a low temperature and measure the adsorption amount by gradually adding nitrogen to the sample surface. We then calculate the specific surface area of the sample according to the isothermal adsorption data. This method helps evaluate the microscopic pore structure and specific surface area of biochar, providing key information for its performance and application.

    • Ash

We measure the ash content of biochar by weighing the residue after high-temperature calcination.

    • Organic carbon

We use different chemical analysis methods, such as elemental analyzer, thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), or directly burn the inorganic carbon to measure the amount of residual organic carbon to analyze the organic carbon content in biochar.

    • Volatile components

We heat the biochar sample to a certain temperature and measure the content of volatile components by measuring the thermal weight loss.

    • Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons

We use appropriate solvents to extract polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in the sample and use chromatography-mass spectrometry to analyze and quantify polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons.

We place the biochar sample into a calorimeter and burn it completely to measure the heat released by the combustion of the sample. This analysis method helps evaluate the combustion performance and calorific value of biochar as a fuel and provides important reference information for its potential value in the field of energy applications.

  • Structural feature analysis
    • Morphology

We use transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) to observe the surface morphology and pore structure of biochar.

    • X-ray diffraction (XRD)

It is mainly used to analyze the information on crystal structure in biochar.

  • Elemental content analysis

We dissolve and convert biochar samples into analyzable forms, and then accurately determine the main elements, trace elements, and heavy metal elements in biochar by inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) and inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectroscopy (ICP-OES). This analytical method helps to understand the composition, element content, and potential impact of biochar in environmental engineering, soil improvement, and other application fields, which provides important data support for further research and application.

  • Functional analysis

In addition, we also provide adsorption performance testing, Soil Improvement Effect Evaluation, thermal stability, and storage stability analysis for biochar samples.

Published data

Sewage sludge (SS) contains a variety of organic pollutants and harmful metals. The common methods of disposing of these solid wastes include incineration, landfill, and dumping into the sea, which seriously negatively impacts the environment. Therefore, there is an urgent need to improve the treatment options for SS. Studies have shown that pyrolysis and gasification are effective and environmentally friendly options for treating SS. In this study, the authors comprehensively evaluated the biochar prepared from SS and its effects on soil properties, plant growth, and greenhouse gas emissions. The results showed that the main elemental components of the prepared sewage sludge biochar (SSB) were C, O, H, P, N, and K. Moreover, with the increase in pyrolysis temperature, the pH value and element content in SSB changed, and the content of inorganic components also increased. Compared with sewage sludge composting, SSB showed stronger potential for soil improvement, could effectively sequester carbon in soil, improve soil quality, and reduce greenhouse gas emissions. It is a low-cost and effective measure to prevent environmental degradation.

FAQs

Q1: How should I collect and store biochar samples for analysis?

A1: It is recommended that clients avoid external contamination when collecting biochar samples and use clean tools and containers for sampling. Samples should be stored in dry, sealed containers away from high temperatures and direct sunlight.

Q2: What does your analysis service include? What specific data and reports can I get?

A2: Our analysis services usually include detailed analysis of the physical and chemical properties, pore structure, surface properties, elemental content, etc. of biochar. You will receive a detailed report including numerical data, charts, and explanations of various parameters.

Q3: What is the price of your analysis service? How long does it take to get a complete analysis report?

A3: Our prices depend on the complexity and scope of the required analysis projects. Please contact us for a detailed quote. The analysis cycle depends on the number and type of samples. Generally, we will provide a complete analysis report within 1 to 3 weeks after receiving the samples.
