Overview of Helicobacter pylori (H. Pylori)

H. pylori is a common Gram-negative, microaerophilic human infectious agent that causes stomach infections. It is a major factor in peptic ulcers and is also closely related to the development of gastric cancer. Furthermore, this pathogen is a crucial cause of various gastroduodenal diseases such as chronic gastritis, peptic ulcer and chronic active gastritis. In addition, the prevalence of this bacterial infection is closely associated with multiple factors, including age, geographic region, and socioeconomic status.

Causes of H. pylori infection

The route of transmission of H. Pylori is still unclear. It can be spread through unclean food and water, or through contact with the saliva and other bodily fluids of an infected person. In addition, it may also be spread through contact with vomit or feces. Currently, there is no effective vaccine against H. pylori. It can be treated with a combination of antibiotics and acid-lowering drugs. Since the bacterium can be spread through unclean food and water, several approaches are effective for preventing it, for example, eating food that has been handled safely and drinking water that is free from bacteria are valid ways to prevent infection.

Diagnosis and Prevention

Accurate diagnosis of H. pylori infection is essential to the management of many gastroduodenal disorders. Diagnostic tests are generally divided into invasive and non-invasive methods, common invasive diagnostic tests include endoscopic images, rapid urease tests, histological and molecular methods while non-invasive diagnostic tests include urea breath tests, stool antigen tests, serological and molecular tests. Each method has advantages and limitations, for example, endoscopic methods contribute to the real-time diagnosis of H. pylori while serology plays an important role in epidemiological studies.
