Anti-Microbial Polysaccharide Antibody Products

Introduction of Polysaccharides (PS)

These molecules are complicated natural polymers composed of specific monosaccharide molecules. Furthermore, they are chain-like polymerized carbohydrates formed by glycosidic bonds. They can be divided into two categories based on the type of constituent units: homo PS, in which the units are the same, and hetero PS, in which the units are distinct. The general monomeric units in these macromolecules are glucose, fructose as well as galactose. These polymers take various forms due to the variety of attached units and carbons. Molecules with straight chains of monosaccharides are called linear glycans while chains with arms and turns are called branched glycans. In general, these complex molecules include storage polycarbohydrates such as starch, glycogen, and galactose, and structural ones such as cellulose and chitin.

Properties

Structural differences confer diverse physical and chemical features on these molecules. These polymers are non-toxic, naturally biodegradable biopolymers. They are usually heterogeneous, containing minor modifications to the repeating units. These are high molecular weight carbohydrates. Inside the cell, they are compact and osmotically inactive. Additionally, they may be amorphous. Importantly, they are hydrophobic in nature and they do not form crystals when dried.

Functions

They can serve a variety of vital functions in nature. In general, these complex biological macromolecules are significant parts of plant cells. They provide support for cells. The PS cellulose is a structural component present in plant cell walls. Another structured PS is chitin. In insects and fungi, chitin is involved in providing support for the extracellular matrix around cells. In addition, they are a pivotal source of energy for animal cells, and some of them, such as starch and glycogen, play a vital role in storing energy. Notably, many glycans are covalently connected to lipids as well as proteins to form glycolipids and glycoproteins, which are intimately linked to intracellular signaling.
