Introduction of Tetanus
Tetanus, also named lockjaw, refers to a severe bacterial infection caused by Clostridium tetani. Muscle spasms are the most classical symptom of tetanus, and other symptoms may include sweating, fever, headache, and high blood pressure. These symptoms usually appear 3 to 21 days after infection.
C. tetani, which is common in nature, can enter the body through broken skin and produce toxins that interfere with normal muscle contraction. Tetanus neurotoxin (TeNT), also known as tetanospasmin, is a kind of neuroprotein toxin produced by C. tetani, which can cause hyperreflexia response and striated muscle spasm by inhibiting the release of inhibitory neurotransmitters. The mechanism of action of this process consists of four major steps, including binding to neurons, toxin internalization, membrane translocation, and target VAMP cleavage.

Diagnostic and Treatment of Tetanus
Till now, there is no blood test for diagnosing tetanus. Different from most infectious diseases, recovery from tetanus does not confer immunity because of the extreme potency of tetanospasmin toxin. Generally speaking, tetanus can be prevented by vaccination against tetanus. In severe cases of infection, both the tetanus vaccine and tetanus immune globulin are required.
For mild tetanus, antibiotics and tetanus immune globulin (TIG) can reduce toxin production and relieve symptoms. For severe tetanus, intrathecal injection of human tetanus immune globulin or even tracheotomy is required.
