Viable Weed Seed Analysis Service

Mature Analysis of Viable Weed Seed at Creative Biolabs

Anaerobic digestion can decompose organic waste and produce gases such as methane, which affects the microbial community and soil environment in the soil, thereby affecting the survival of weed seeds. The activities or compounds produced by certain microorganisms may affect weed seeds, making them more susceptible to decomposition or degradation, thereby reducing their survival rate. Given this, in addition to providing a variety of Anaerobic Digestion Analysis services, Creative Biolabs also provides mature viable weed seed analysis services. We extract potential weed seeds from samples of soil or other sources and analyze and evaluate them. This analysis helps researchers understand the number of potential weeds in the soil and how to take control measures.

  • Variety detection

We use microscopy technology to observe the shape, color, texture, and other characteristics of seeds to identify the specific weed species present in the sample.

  • Purity

We calculate the proportion of different weed seeds in the sample by visual and counting methods. Purity detection provides a more comprehensive understanding of the composition and structure of seed samples, provides basic data support for agricultural production and plant research, and thus takes corresponding control and management measures in a targeted manner.

  • Germination rate

We pass the obtained samples through a sieve to separate the seeds, and then wash the seeds with water to remove impurities attached to the surface of the seeds. We then place the cleaned seeds in a petri dish containing the appropriate nutrient solution and incubate them under appropriate temperature and humidity conditions. We regularly observe the germination of the seeds, record the number and speed of germination, and calculate the germination rate. In weed seed analysis, germination rate testing helps determine the number and vitality of weed seeds in the soil, so that appropriate control measures can be taken. Based on the analysis results, we assess the potential weed seed contamination in the soil or seed samples and provide clients with professional advice and measures to reduce the impact of weeds on crops.

  • Moisture content

Moisture content is one of the indicators of seed quality. Too high or too low moisture content may lead to reduced germination rate and viability of seeds, so testing moisture content helps to evaluate the status of seeds. We record the initial weight of the seed sample, then place the sample in a constant temperature and humidity dryer or oven, and dry it at a certain temperature for a while until the seed weight no longer changes. We weigh it again and calculate the moisture content by the difference between the two weights.

Published data

New weeds mainly come from the soil seed bank in the crop production system, so understanding the existence status of weed seeds helps formulate reasonable weed management measures. Studies have shown that the order of crop planting affects the types of weeds in the soil, so the authors studied the effects of different planting systems on seed density and community composition, and used the seedling germination method to evaluate the vitality density and diversity of weed seeds in the soil. The results showed that during the two-year study period, the total occurrence of weed seeds in the rice-maize system was lower than that in the rice-wheat system, and the seed density was significantly higher after the crops were treated with residues. Compared with the other three planting techniques, the zero tillage dry seeded rice-zero tillage (ZTDSR-ZT) technology produced a lower total density of weed seeds and a lower emergence rate. Therefore, the authors concluded that crop rotation, residues, and planting techniques affected the occurrence of weeds and the composition of weed communities. This information helps formulate reasonable weed management measures to protect agricultural production systems.
