Lymphoid Progenitor Assays

Colony-Forming Unit – Pre-B Lymphocyte (CFU-PreB)

CFU-pre-B is a progenitor that generates colonies of B-lymphocytes. All cells of the lymphoid lineage are derived from a common lymphoid progenitor, which differentiates from bone marrow hematopoietic stem cells. T cell progenitors derived from common lymphoid progenitors leave the bone marrow through the blood and enter the thymus. These cells continue to grow in the thymus gland, where precursor cells eventually mature into mature T lymphocytes with distinctive surface antigens and useful properties.

Importance of Lymphoid Progenitor Assays

Lymphoid progenitor cells must survive and proliferate to generate a typical number of adult lymphocytes. A kind of SCID known as reticular dysgenesis (RD) is distinguished by the presence of significant lymphopenia, agranulocytosis, and sensorineural deafness.
