Limitations of Traditional Tumor Models

In view of the severe danger, research on tumors has been a hot spot for decades. As common choices for studying tumors, traditional cell lines and animal models both still have certain defects. The former belongs to a standard 2D cell culture model where cells are grown in ordinary culture medium environments. In such 2D in vitro systems, the characteristics of the original tumor itself and the interaction process of the tumor cell and other surrounding cells can't be observed effectively. As a complementary in vivo model to cell lines, animal models are very advantageous for systematically studying tumors. But there is no denying that animal models often take a long time to establish, and meanwhile, the cost is higher. Thus, it's necessary to seek a novel tumor model.

Advantages of 3D Tumor Organoid Models

Tumor organoids can be constructed by the 3D culture of tumor cells in mice or patients, or through gene editing in the 3D culture of non-tumor cells in mice or patients. The emergence of organoid technology 3D tumor organoid models brings a new idea to tumor research, bypassing the limitations of traditional models. Such models can retain specific tissue structures and genomic properties. They can not only intuitively show how tumors grow, but also reflect the individual differences between different patients. On the basis of considering the cell-cell interaction, this kind of model is also cheaper and more efficient.

Applications of 3D Tumor Organoid Models
