3D Ex Vivo Secondary Airways (Healthy) Contractility Model Introduction

Overview of Second Airways

The second airways, also known as the lobar bronchi, are near the middle of the lungs. The bronchi play an integral function in respiration. Air enters the trachea from the larynx and travels down to specific junctions that branch to form the left and right primary bronchi. Each of these bronchi branches to form secondary bronchi, which branch into tertiary bronchi, which branch into bronchioles, and eventually the alveoli connect. A bronchial infection can cause a range of problems, such as breathing difficulties and mucus buildup.

Why Develop Ex Vivo Models?

Currently, a variety of ex vivo models such as tracheobronchial explants, microdissected airways and lung slices can be preserved as organ cultures. These models play a vital role in vitro carcinogenesis, biochemical, immunochemical, and morphological studies. Explants and organ cultures provide powerful tools for observation undisturbed by systemic and inflammatory factors. Lung slices and airway explant cultures are closely linked to the study of bronchoconstriction pharmacology, in vitro carcinogenesis, and airway repair after injury. Notably, the role of the small airways in immediate allergic responses remains unknown. The model of precision-cut lung slices (PCLS) provides an attractive tool for small airway functional responses.

Features of PCLS

At present, PCLS is playing an increasingly important role in the study of small airway response. PCLS has the following advantages:
